Alfa Insurance Opens Business Processing Center

Montgomery, Alabama (July 24, 2006) - Alfa Insurance today formally opened its new Business Processing Center. The134,000-square-foot facility is designed to protect the company’s key processing functions and ensure business continuity. In the event of a major disaster, mission-critical functions will be relocated to the building and managed from a fully equipped command center.

More than 22,000 tons of concrete and 775 tons of reinforced steel were used to construct the building, which can sustain winds from an F3 tornado or a Category 5 hurricane. Side walls and windows can withstand a 130 mph projectile. Redundant generators can provide uninterrupted power for a week.

The facility also serves as Alfa’s technology and training center, housing the mainframe operating system, server farm, desktop support, database administration and the LAN and WAN networks. Telephone processors support 16,000 calls per day. The content management system processes 1.4 million documents per month for electronic storage and the mail distribution center sends out more than 175,000 pieces of mail each week. The new facility provides ample opportunities for increased capacity.

“This new multi-purpose facility will greatly enhance our ability to serve Alfa customers – whether in the normal course of business or during a major catastrophe,” said Lee Ellis, Executive Vice President of Operations. “It was also designed to meet our expanding needs in the coming years as Alfa grows.”

“We have customers in 13 states and considered a number of locations to build this center,” said Jerry Newby, Alfa President and CEO. “We made a deliberate decision to build this facility right here in Montgomery, Alabama, our headquarters city and state.”

Also on display at the Grand Opening were Alfa’s new Mobile Response Units. These two self-contained, 38-foot-long buses can provide connectivity to Alfa’s network via satellite, cellular or land line technology. They are equipped with computer stations inside and connection points outside to serve as mobile offices. They can be dispatched to disaster locations to help process claims and serve other customer needs, even if telephone and electrical services are not available.
