Ice Storm Hits North Alabama, Mississippi

MONTGOMERY, Alabama (March 5, 2015) - North Alabama and Mississippi residents are dealing with ice accumulations of up to one inch as a band of freezing rain and sleet continues to move across the area. This amount of ice usually causes severe tree damage and power outages.

Policyholders with home or property damage due to ice may file a claim by contacting local Alfa® service centers or calling 1-800-964-2532. Claims may also be filed online at or through the Alfa2Go® app for iPhone and Android smartphones.

“Tree limbs often break under the heavy weight of ice, which can cause property damage,” said Alfa Insurance Senior Vice President of Claims Bryan Hubbard. “We want Alfa policyholders to know that our adjusters are ready to help so damages can be repaired quickly.”

According to the Weather Channel, a half-inch of ice on power lines can add 500 pounds of weight and can increase the weight of tree branches by 30 times.

Ice is often difficult to see on roadways. Motorists should use extreme caution and avoid travel, if possible.

A Winter Storm Warning for sleet and freezing rain is in effect until 3 p.m. in Alabama for Blount, Colbert, Cullman, DeKalb, Fayette, Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Lamar, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Morgan, Pickens, Tuscaloosa, Walker and  Winston counties. Forecasters expect precipitation to end by this evening.
