Severe Thunderstorms Possible Through Wednesday Across Alabama

Montgomery, Ala. (Apr. 28, 2014) - Severe thunderstorms are expected to bring high winds and heavy rains to Alabama this afternoon through early Wednesday morning. The greatest threats are tornadoes and flash flooding, according to forecasters.

Scattered showers are currently impacting the state. The first round of severe weather is forecast to start in west Alabama early this afternoon and move across the state through Tuesday morning. Potentially, a second wave of severe storms could impact Alabama on Tuesday, increasing the chance of flash flooding.

Stay aware of weather watches and warnings with a weather radio or alerts for smartphones. Alabamians can sign up for the state’s SAF-T-Net, a mobile service for iPhone and Android users that sends notifications of impending severe weather. Learn more at AlabamaSAFTNet.com. Tune into local radio and television stations for the latest weather conditions or go to the National Weather Service (NWS) website at nws.noaa.gov.

The Birmingham NWS transmitter for weather radios is currently operating at reduced capacity. Those living in Birmingham should check to ensure they receive test warnings on the radio. If the tests do not come through, use another source to receive warnings, like a smartphone app.

Do not rely on outdoor weather sirens for warnings. These sirens are only meant to notify people who are outdoors and reach is extremely limited.
