The Federation was created in 1921 as a membership organization. It was founded by farmers, has always been led by farmers, and remains dedicated to serving farmers as well as the promotion of the economic, social and educational interests of Alabamians.
The Alabama Farm Bureau began selling fire insurance as a membership/service benefit which led Federation leaders to establish what is known today as Alfa Insurance in 1946.

Alfa Insurance sustained over $22 million in paid claims from Hurricane Fredrick.
In 1995, Hurricane Opal caused significant devastation and was classified as a Category 4 hurricane. Alfa® sustained $79 million in paid claims for Hurricane Opal.
Alfa acquired Trexis, formerly Vision Insurance Group, LLC, in 2005. Since then, the non-standard company has grown its portfolio fivefold. Trexis is headquartered in Franklin, Tennessee, and serves customers through a network of independent agents.
Unprecedented tornado outbreaks resulted in the largest historical catastrophe event for Alfa Insurance with nearly $450 million in paid claims.
Today, Alfa has grown to offer an excellent array of insurance coverages and has become known for superior customer service. Alfa and our affiliates now provide insurance and other financial services to customers in multiple states.
