What’s the difference between uninsured and underinsured?

  • Uninsured Motorist coverage may protect you from having to pay out of pocket when an at-fault driver doesn't have insurance.
  • Underinsured Motorist coverage may help pay your expenses when an at-fault driver doesn't have enough coverage to cover damages. This is typically bundled with Uninsured Motorist coverage.
What's Covered?*
  • Payment for bodily injury damages caused by an uninsured/underinsured motorist for covered persons while operating or occupying a vehicle*
  • Payment for bodily injury damages caused by an uninsured/underinsured motorist for covered persons as pedestrians*
  • Property damage coverage when loss is caused by an uninsured/underinsured motorist (deductibles applicable) [For Georgia and Mississippi policyholders only]

*Only applies if uninsured/underinsured motorist is at fault and your policy has uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

Some exclusions apply. All coverages are subject to deductibles and policy limits. This is not an insurance policy. It is intended only to provide a general description of Alfa Insurance® and/or its product lines and services. An actual policy contains the specific details of the coverages, conditions and exclusions. Your Alfa® agent can explain the policy and benefits and answer any questions you may have before you buy.

How much Uninsured Motorist coverage will I need?

Talk with your agent about what is recommended for you, but UM coverage should be equal to your liability limits. UM coverage cannot be higher than your liability limits.

When would Uninsured Motorist coverage apply?

If you're involved in a covered accident with a driver who has no insurance, not enough insurance, or are involved in a hit-and-run accident, Uninsured Motorist coverage would help cover damages for bodily injury if the covered person is legally entitled to collect such damages from the owner or driver of an uninsured car.
