As F. Scott Fitzgerald writes in “The Great Gatsby,” “Life starts all over again in the fall.” The famous literary author who once lived in the South may know a thing or two about making the most of this season. There’s so much fun to be had and we don’t want you missing out on any of it, so here’s a list of fun things to do in the South this fall!
1. Go to a college football game
It’s just not fall without experiencing a tailgate or two, and SEC teams know how to tailgate! If you’ve never experienced a “Saturday down South,” you may want to make this the year to change that. Here’s a look the football schedules for the SEC teams in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi:

2022 Auburn University Football Schedule

If you can’t make it to an SEC football game this year, the Friday night lights at your local high school will do the trick. The smell of the grass, the sound of a ref’s whistle and cracking helmets are more than enough to put you in the fall mood.
2. Visit a pumpkin patch
A pumpkin patch is a memorable family tradition! When you visit a pumpkin patch, you not only leave with a new pumpkin for painting, carving or decorating, but you also leave with memories. Most pumpkin patches are full of activities such as a corn maze, hayride, bounce houses, tractor pulls and more – making it the perfect place for kids to get some energy out while you enjoy the cooler temps.
Alabama has pumpkin patches across the state, from near the coast in Baldwin county to the tippy top of North Alabama in Lauderdale county.

The peach state may be known for one orange-hued fruit, but that’s no reason Georgia can’t have some noteworthy pumpkin patches, too! From Uncle Shuck’s Pumpkin Patch in Dawsonville to Yule Forest in Stockbridge, you’ll have plenty of fall fun with a different orange fruit (yes, pumpkins are a fruit)!

When it comes to Southern hospitality, Mississippi reigns supreme, and we’re sure they don’t skimp on their pumpkin patches, as well. Visit a pumpkin patch in the hospitality state this fall!

3. Take a hike
Temperatures are finally comfortable, and the leaves are changing colors to beautiful shades of red, orange and yellow, which makes fall a spectacular time to go on an outdoor hike. As the leaves fall off the trees, it allows for an even better view of the picturesque landscapes this part of our country has to offer.

4. Rent a cabin in the mountains or enjoy off-season on the coast
If hiking views aren’t enough, a weekend getaway to somewhere scenic may do the trick. Getting out of your town and seeing other parts of your state or a neighboring state is a great way to refresh and reconnect with nature. If you want a cozy campfire and smores in your future, head to your favorite online booking site to find a quaint cabin. Bonus points if it has no wi-fi so you can truly relax!
Not the mountain type? Head to the coast! Beaches aren’t solely a summer spot. Enjoying a coastal vacation during the off season is particularly peaceful when you’re not fighting for a spot on the shoreline with all the other tourists during busy season. Another perk: less wait times at restaurants!
Places like Tybee Island in Georgia, Orange Beach in Alabama, and Gulfport, Mississippi, offer a relaxing escape.
5. Visit a festival
If you feel like your calendar is slammed pack this year, you’re not alone. From your local county fair to jazz festivals to harvest gatherings, this is prime time for some fun events. Check out the festivals near you and make it a priority to attend a new one this season!
