Severe Storm Center

Preparing for a severe storm of any kind can help protect lives and property. While some storms are unpredictable and can strike at any time, there are always things you can do to prepare ahead of time. Here is a handy Storm Preparation Checklist (PDF format) that you can print and use to help protect your family.

What to do when a natural disaster strikes

Before

  • Sign up for free, safety and weather alerts
  • Designate a sheltering space inside your home and be sure children know where to go in the event you are not home when a storm hits.
  • Gather your supplies such as non-perishable food, water, weather radio, etc.
  • Take photos of your property inside and out. This can help show damage from the storm if you need to file a claim.
  • Charge your devices in case you experience a power outage.
  • Follow evacuation recommendations promptly

During

  • Stay in your safe space until the storm is over
  • Watch for rising water and be aware of how quickly flooding can happen. Turn off electricity from the main breaker and move to the highest level, if needed
  • Consider wearing a helmet and putting young babies in car seats for extra protection
  • Continue listening to safety alerts to stay up to date with weather conditions

After

  • Once it’s safe, assess any damage you may have. Take photos and videos.
  • Take all precautions to prevent future damage. Save receipts if you need to purchase anything such as a tarp to cover a hole in a roof.
  • If you need to file a claim, do so as soon as it’s safe to do so.

If you’ve suffered damage, you should file a claim right away.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about storm-related claims

If you have comprehensive coverage, your auto insurance policy may cover hail damage up to the policy limits. Most homeowners policies cover hail damage, too. Hail can cause damage that is expensive to repair, so talk with your agent about your coverage and policy limits.

It depends, most homeowners insurance policies include coverage for other structures on your property, such as a garage and/or shed; however, some policies have certain exclusions so, talk with your agent.

It depends. If the mold is a result of a covered loss, such as rain coming in a house from storm damage, then home insurance is likely to cover the costs to remove mold and repair damages, up to the mold limit outlined on the policy. But if the mold is a result of flooding, a leaking pipe or neglect, it is likely not covered. Talk with your agent about mold and your homeowners policy.

All coverages are subject to deductibles and policy limits. This is not an insurance policy. It is intended only to provide a general description of Alfa Insurance® and/or its product lines and services. An actual policy contains the specific details of the coverages, conditions and exclusions. Your Alfa® agent can explain the policy and benefits and answer any questions you may have before you buy.
