Service and respect… two values that have traveled with Bryan Hubbard from the football field to a senior vice president position at one of the largest insurance providers in the Southeast. And living out these two values led him to being awarded the title of Troy University’s 2021 Alumni of the Year.
A 1988 graduate of Troy State University (now Troy University), Hubbard has worked in the claims department at Alfa Insurance for 32 years. During this time, he served as a claims representative, a district claims manager, regional vice president and was selected as senior vice president of claims, where he currently serves, in 2014.
While at Troy, Hubbard played on the Trojans’ football team, where he learned how respect leads to victory. He recalls, “I played football for some of the greatest coaches in the history of the school. They worked us hard but treated every player with respect. They had a Christian-based approach, and we won two national championships under the philosophy of treating everyone with respect. The level of detail was tremendous, which taught me to always pay attention to the details. If you handle the details then the plan will come together, whether in sports, life or work.”
That philosophy is at play in his work today in the way his team members respect each other and are dedicated to serving Alfa’s customers. He says, “I have a team of 250 employees that come to work every day to serve our customers. I am so fortunate to work in a claims department that takes pride in how we service our customers. This motivates me every day to come to work and try to make their jobs easier by providing them the support and encouragement they need to perform at such a high level.”
A lot has changed over the years since Hubbard graduated from TROY, but he has helped instill service and respect along the way. Recalling the differences between today’s Alfa and the Alfa where he first worked, Hubbard says, “When I started with Alfa, we had carbon paper, polaroid cameras, beepers, hand-written drafts and estimates. I will never forget when we got email and my co-worker would send an email then call the recipient to make sure they received his message! We have entered the world of technology with paperless workflows, internet tools for investigating suspicious claims, digital payments, texting customers, and virtual meetings. Alfa is stronger today than I have ever seen over the past 32 years. We are moving faster than ever, and we have every employee focused on a common goal -- to serve each other and our customers.”
This service extends beyond his career to his alma mater as well. He’s a lifetime member of the Troy University Alumni Association and holds membership in in TROY’s Montgomery Metro Alumni Chapter. He also holds a position on the TROY Risk Management and Insurance Advisory Board, as well. Outside of his work and TROY involvement, Hubbard’s list of philanthropic involvement is varied and vast. It’s easy to see why he is being honored as an Alumni of the Year. We’re proud of Hubbard and congratulate him on this a recognition!
