Renters Coverages

Untitled Document

Designed to protect you from financial hardship due to a covered loss while you’re renting a residence, a renters insurance policy may include a set of coverages, which can be customized for your needs.

Included Coverages

Personal Property

Covers the cost to repair or replace your personal belongings if they’re stolen, damaged or destroyed by a covered peril.

Example: Your apartment is burglarized. Your expensive gaming system is stolen, and your furniture is damaged in the process. Personal property coverage will pay to repair or replace these items, up to your policy limits.

Loss Of Use

Reimburses the excess cost you incur to temporarily relocate if the place you rent becomes uninhabitable due to a covered loss.

Example: A fire breaks out in the building, and your unit is considered unsafe to live in until it’s fumigated. You have to rent a hotel for two weeks, pay to have your dog boarded, and spend money on meals because you don’t have access to a kitchen. The additional funds you spend during this period could be reimbursed, up to your policy limits.

Personal Liability

Coverage for financial hardship, such as a legal suit, that may come from being considered at fault for another person’s bodily injury or property damage.

Example: It’s burger night, but you get distracted at the grill and a fire breaks out. It quickly spreads to your neighbor’s fence, leaving it damaged, and your negligence is to blame. This coverage would pay, for the damage to your neighbor’s property, up to the policy limits.

Medical Payments

Coverage for a guest’s medical costs if you’re deemed liable for the cause of injury.

Example: You’ve been meaning to fix that wobbly cobblestone walkway for months. Your great aunt comes to visit, takes a tumble and breaks her ankle. Your liability for her medical bills may be covered, up to your policy limits.

*Some exclusions apply. All coverages are subject to deductibles and policy limits. This is not an insurance policy. It is intended only to provide a general description of Alfa Insurance® and/or its product lines and services. An actual policy contains the specific details of the coverages, conditions and exclusions. Your Alfa® agent can explain the policy and benefits and answer any questions you may have before you buy.

Included Coverages

Personal Property

Under this coverage, your belongings such as furniture, jewelry, electronics and more may be replaced or repaired if they’re damaged or stolen in a covered event.

Example: You come home to find your manufactured home has been broken into. Your favorite jewelry is missing, as are a laptop and an air fryer, as well. Personal property coverage may pay to replace these stolen items, up to your policy limits.

Loss Of Use

This coverage may reimburse additional expenses you incur after being displaced from your manufactured home by a covered event.

Example: A fire broke out in your manufactured home, causing a lot of damage. While it’s being repaired, you have to rent a hotel room, pay to board your dog and eat out nearly every meal. The additional expenses you have to pay while your home is deemed unlivable may be reimbursed, up to your policy limits.

Personal Liability

Coverage for legal or medical expenses if you’re found liable for someone else’s injuries or property damage.

Example: That big oak tree in your front yard is beautiful...until a storm comes through and it falls right onto your neighbor’s fence. This coverage may pay for the repairs, and any legal fees associated with the incident, up to the policy limits.

Renters Insurance FAQs

Anyone living in a rental, whether an apartment, condo, or a single-family dwelling, should strongly consider renters insurance for financial protection of personal belongings and personal liability.

Your agent can answer questions about what perils your renters insurance policy may cover. A typical renters policy may provide financial protection to your belongings if damaged by theft, fires, vandalism and windstorms. Additionally, your personal liability coverage is usually included on a renters policy, too.

It’s important to know how much your belongings are worth so you can get a proper limit on your renters insurance. Walk around, room by room, and video everything. Make a list of your belongings and estimate the cost of each. Total that up and use that as a guide when evaluating how much your stuff is worth. It’s probably more than you think!
